Background

In response to the strong community need for accessible and affordable recreation alternatives for local young people during the school holidays, the Centre for Multicultural Youth and Banksia Gardens Community Centre decided to embark on a partnership in order to establish an ongoing school holiday program in Broadmeadows. The program was first delivered in Term 3 2008.

The Banksia Gardens School Holiday Program will take place at the end of every school term for two weeks and it will offer young people a combination of educational, recreational and sport activities including, but not limited to:

  1. Art workshops.
  2. Bowling.
  3. City tours (Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Museums, Aquarium, MCG tour).
  4. Dancing (e.g. Breakdance).
  5. Family Party (Parents invited).
  6. Movie nights.
  7. Multimedia workshops (e.g. Stop motion animation, movie making).
  8. Music (e.g. Drumming, hip hop).
  9. Excursions (e.g. Healesville, Lifesaving Victoria/Swim day).
  10. Rock Climbing.
  11. Singing.
  12. Sports (e.g. soccer, fencing, table tennis, basketball).

The partners have a clear vision of a sustainable program that uses resources efficiently to meet community need for high quality, affordable and accessible school holiday programs.

Program goals

As well as an end in itself, the partners see this program as a perfect opportunity to effectively engage young people, at a relatively young age, in education and recreation programs and activities that can offer them support to complete their studies, to undertake further education and to increase their connections with the community and their participation in sports and recreation activities.

In addition to this, the program will attempt to provide young people with practical skills and with nutritional information that will improve their ability to make healthy choices in relation to their future lifestyle and diet. In order to achieve this, young people will be involved in purchasing healthy food and cooking.
