BANKSIA GARDENS COMMUNITY CENTRE

Banksia Gardens Community Centre is one of approximately 370 Neighbourhood Houses in Victoria, operating in the public housing estate of Broadmeadows in the City of Hume.

Banksia Gardens is a place of support in your local neighbourhood. We believe that each and every person is a valued member of the community. We welcome you to come along and make new friends, join in with our activities and help to create the spirit of community participation.

Banksia Gardens Community Centre is a fun, safe, friendly and supportive environment where people can come together to learn skills, share ideas and experience new activities. The Centre is full of interesting things to do and see, with plenty of information about other community groups and services. All are welcome as we are open to all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds.

Banksia Gardens Community Centre offers membership to all Centre participants and to those who live and/or work within the local areas. Membership to Banksia Gardens Association Inc. is just $1.00 per year.

NWNH NETWORK

Banksia Gardens Community Centre belongs to the North West Neighbourhood House Network (NWNHN), which represents 19 Neighbourhood House and Learning Centres in Hume and Moreland. All members of this Network are natural partners in our community and have a long history of successful collaboration working towards redressing structural disadvantage.

MANAGER'S REPORT

Much to report at the moment and many wonderful things happening. Banksia Gardens has recently been successful in receiving another $302,000 towards the Banksia Redevelopment Project. The maintenance works will commence in mid October 2009 and we are pleased that we can confirm that the Eco Classroom will be built in the next 12 months. Please contact me if you would like more information about our redevelopment plans.

As a consequence of the works commencing in October, we will not be running many classes on site. As there will be builders on site during the day, it is important that we be mindful of safety and not have the general public in the building. We will continue to run all our courses and many of our activities, though at various locations. Thank you to Attwood House Community Centre, Dallas Neighbourhood House, Mary Magdalene Church, Broadmeadows Valley Primary School, Dianella Community Health, the Office of Maria Vamvakinou MP and the Hume Global Learning Village for providing wonderful venues to hold our courses and activities during this time. Please contact the office for information on where your course or activity will be held.

On 9th September 2009 we held our Annual General Meeting. Again thank you to the Turkish women for providing us with a beautiful dinner. See Events for the minutes of the meeting. On the 19th of November 2009 we will be launching the Hume'N Writes publication and presenting the winners of the human rights competition with their prizes. Following this there will be a public lecture with some fantastic guest speakers: The Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner, Brian Walters SC and Mohammed El-Leissy have already confirmed their participation, which is terrific!

We have again held a great school holiday program. Some of the activities we have provided the children include Master Chef Challenge Race, hockey, photography and video, Cultural Celebration day, Master Chef Magic Community Garden, bowling, adventure day and movie night.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish Linda Franco, Hume Playgroup Coordinator, all the very best as she embarks on getting well enough to join the team at Banksia Gardens again.

Regards to all,

Gina Dougall - Manager
